  1. Nice post. That's what mother used to tell me after reciting a few verses from the Narasimha Avatara part. She used to say, "In Kamban's poetry you can actually see the scene right in front of your eyes. It is as if a drama is playing in front of you and you are watching it".

The example you give is very nice. Yup. It is as if an author is teaching us to observe by making his characters observe. And shall I say, nicely observed by you as well :)

Unfortunately I am not able to get some of the verses from the web. Else they would give a much clear idea of what I meant.

  2. Excellent. Kamban saw what he did and used the characters to express what his mind's eyes saw is what I am able to gather. I have not read a single verse of Kamba Ramayanam yet. Your posts and vaayaadals make me want to read the book. But would like it with an urai. Any ebooks available? Project Madurai la irukkuma?

  3. Thank You Suresh.
Perhaps the scene in in Yuddha Kaandam - which I am yet to start.

    The text is online

But you have to go படலம் by படலம் and search for keywords like
ஆள்அரி - a beautiful Tamilization of Narasimmam by NammAzhwAr - which Kamban may have used.
    etc.

  4. Yes got the text yesterday through another post of yours on Kamban. Thanks. And yes, the ஆள்அரி usage does strike a chord with the ஆண்பிள்ளைச் சோறாள்வி Periya Vaachaan Pillai uses to describe Vishnu as Mohini, சோறாள்வி being someone who manages food (a woman) who happens to be an ஆண்பிள்ளை. Kannadasan makes this point in ArthamuLLa Hindu Madham about these Vaishnavite saints blessing Tamil with more words.

  5. Thanks for the link. I actually know a few verses of Yuddha Kandam by-heart :) Just that I am not sure of my memory and also having difficulty getting a Tamil keyboard mapping after shifting to Suse Linux from Windows.

  6. TDM,
    Thanks for comments.
Sorry for the belated response. I've heard of ஆண்பிள்ளைச் சோறாள்வி. Quite an expression!
